What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

Both the turtle and the tortoise are reptiles and belong to the same family, the difference is that turtles can live in water and on land too. But, the tortoise can only live on the land and cannot swim. The shell of a turtle is lighter than that of a tortoise.
